"Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin
shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." -
ISAIAH 7:14
I.
Some of the most famous debates in theological history have revolved
around the translation of this piece of text from the Bible.
There are different versions of the Old Testament that exist, which
refer to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, which refer to her as "the young
woman" or "alma." This was discovered in a scroll found in the
Qumran Library, often referred to as the Dead Sea Scrolls.
When the original Hebrew text of the Old Testament was translated
into Greek, the word alma was translated into the word
parthenos, which means "virgin" rather than "young
woman." There isn't even agreement on when this translation
took place; whether it was before the birth of Jesus or after, so to
answer whether it was the Jews who changed it prior or the
Christians who changed it after (to align with the "virgin"
doctrines), will most-likely forever remain unanswered.
